Does religion have the right answers?
Around the world, students are taking action to fight bullying and anti-gay harassment. For over a decade, thousands of schools have participated in the Day of Silence to protest homophobia and stand up in support of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students.
But not everyone is happy about this. Groups like Focus on the Family, the Alliance Defense Fund and Exodus International are encouraging students to tell their LGBT classmates that who they are is a sin. Citing their religious beliefs, they've called for a day of "dialogue" — to assert that being gay is wrong.
At a time when anti-gay bullying is at crisis levels, the last thing LGBT students need is to be told that they're the ones who need to change. If conservative Christians want to use their faith to attack gay youth, they need to be prepared for a real dialogue.
